Ajmer

Ajmer
Capital of the Chahamana kingdom of Sambhar, which dominated the territory constituting the present-day state of Rajasthan until 1192. After their victory over Prithviraja III in 1192, the Ghaurids occupied Ranthambhor but Ajmer was restored to the Chahamanas. Ajmer was annexed to the Ghaurid Empire in India during Qutb al-Din Aibek's rule. Under Iltutmish (1211-1236), it was an iqta' that covered the entire territory of the erstwhile Chahamana kingdom. In the early phase of Ghaurid occupation, a monastery of Chishti Sufis was established at Ajmer. The founder of the Chishti order in India, Mu'in al-Din Chishti, lies buried there. His tomb came to be venerated by a large number of Muslims as well as Hindus. Subsequently, Ajmer was important mainly as a center of Sufic inspiration.
